About the Base64 Encode / Decode

Base64 represents binary data as plain text, which is useful for embedding images in HTML or CSS, sending files through JSON, and reading encoded tokens. This tool encodes and decodes text with full Unicode support, and converts files and images into Base64 data URIs.

  1. Choose Text or File.
  2. For text: type or paste, then choose Encode or Decode.
  3. For files: drop an image or file to get its Base64 string and data URI.
  4. Copy the result.
Questions

Frequently asked

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to protect secrets.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It replaces + with - and / with _ and drops the = padding, so the result can be used safely in URLs and file names.

Why is the Base64 output bigger than the file?

Base64 uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so encoded data is about 33% larger than the original.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
