Frequently asked
What are the Roman numeral symbols?
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000.
Why does 4 become IV and not IIII?
Standard Roman numerals use subtraction: a smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted. So 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD and 900 is CM.
What is the largest Roman numeral?
With standard symbols the largest is MMMCMXCIX (3,999). Larger values traditionally used a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
