About the Chord Transposer

Paste any chord sheet, with chords on their own lines above the lyrics or written inline like [Am], and transpose the whole song up or down in semitones or straight to a new key. The lyrics stay as they are and chords stay lined up over the right words, even when a chord name gets longer (C becomes C♯). Slash chords and extensions like Am7, Gsus4 and D/F♯ are handled, sharps or flats are chosen to suit the new key, and guitarists get a list of capo positions with the easy open-chord shapes to play.

  1. Paste your chords and lyrics into the box.
  2. Press + or − to shift by semitones, or choose the key to transpose to.
  3. Copy or download the result, or use the capo suggestion to play it with easy shapes.
Questions

Frequently asked

How do I transpose a song to a lower key for my voice?

Press − one semitone at a time and sing along until it feels comfortable, usually 2 to 5 semitones lower. The tool shows which key you've landed in.

How does a capo change the key?

Each fret of the capo raises the pitch by one semitone. With a capo on fret 2, playing a G shape sounds as A. The capo list shows which shapes to play for the key you want.

Does it understand chords like Cmaj7 or D/F♯?

Yes. Extensions (7, maj7, sus4, add9, dim, aug) are kept, and slash chords have both the chord and the bass note transposed.

Will my lyrics be changed?

No. Only lines that are made of chords (and chords in brackets) are transposed; everything else is left exactly as you wrote it.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
