About the Melody Memory

A Simon-style memory game made of real music. The piano plays a short melody; you play it back on the keyboard. Each round adds one more note and plays a little faster. Start with five notes of the pentatonic scale (it's hard to sound wrong), move up to the eight notes of the major scale, then all twelve notes. Turn on Ears only to hide the key lights and play purely by ear. It's a fun way to build musical memory and learn to play tunes by ear, for kids and adults alike.

  1. Pick a level and press Start.
  2. Listen to the melody (watch the keys light up, unless Ears only is on).
  3. Play it back with the mouse, touch or the letter keys shown. Each round adds a note.
Questions

Frequently asked

Does this game help me play by ear?

Yes. Remembering and reproducing melodies is exactly the skill behind playing songs by ear. Ears only mode makes it a pure listening exercise.

Why does the easy level use five notes?

The pentatonic scale (C D E G A) has no clashing notes, so every melody sounds musical and the notes are easy to tell apart.

Can I play with my computer keyboard?

Yes. The letters on the keys (A S D F G…) play each note.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
