About the Note Reading Trainer

Reading notes quickly is the foundation of sight-reading. This trainer shows one note at a time on the treble clef, bass clef or both, and you name it as fast as you can. Start with the notes on the lines and spaces, then add ledger lines and finally sharps and flats. Answer with note-name buttons, by pressing the exact key on the piano keyboard (great for learning where each note lives), with your computer keyboard letters, or on a real MIDI keyboard. Try the 60-second challenge to build speed; your best score is saved for each clef and level.

  1. Choose a clef and a level.
  2. Name the note: tap a button, press a letter key, or play the exact piano key.
  3. Start the 60-second challenge to build speed.
Questions

Frequently asked

How do I remember the notes on the treble clef?

The lines from bottom to top are E G B D F (Every Good Boy Deserves Fun) and the spaces spell F A C E. On the bass clef the lines are G B D F A (Good Boys Do Fine Always) and the spaces A C E G (All Cows Eat Grass).

What are ledger lines?

Short lines above or below the staff for notes that are too high or low to fit on it. Middle C sits on one ledger line below the treble staff or one above the bass staff.

How can I get faster at reading notes?

Practise for five minutes a day, use landmark notes like middle C, treble G and bass F to work out others quickly, and use the 60-second challenge to push your speed.

Can I use my digital piano?

Yes. Connect it with a USB MIDI cable, press Use MIDI keyboard and play the exact note you see.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
