About the SATB Part Trainer

Learn your line in a four-part hymn or anthem. Each part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) can be soloed, muted or set as My part, which plays your line clearly with the others softly around it, the way choir rehearsal tracks work. Slow it down, change the key, loop a hard passage and tap the notes to jump around, with the words under the melody. Three hymns are included, harmonised for this tool. Open any MIDI file of your choir piece and each track becomes a part. Starting notes plays everyone's first note before you sing.

  1. Choose a hymn, or open a MIDI file of your piece.
  2. Pick your part under My part, or use Solo and Mute.
  3. Press Play. Lower the speed while you learn it, and tap the notes to jump.
  4. Set a start and end to loop a passage until it's secure.
Questions

Frequently asked

Can I use my own music?

Yes. Open a standard MIDI file (.mid). Each track becomes a part, and four unnamed tracks are named soprano to bass from the highest to the lowest. Many choir directors and publishers share MIDI rehearsal files.

What does My part do?

It plays your part at full volume and the other parts softly, so you hear your line clearly and still hear how it fits with the harmony.

Can I change the key?

Yes, up to six semitones up or down, which is handy when your choir sings it in a different key from the copy.

Which hymns are included?

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow (Old Hundredth), Amazing Grace (New Britain) and Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (Hymn to Joy), harmonised in four parts for this tool. The tunes and words are in the public domain.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
