Sur peti drone in any key
About Online Shruti Box
A shruti box holds a steady, harmonium-like drone for you to sing against, a favourite for Carnatic music, bhajans and kirtan. Choose your Sa, tick the notes you want (low Sa and Pa, Sa, Ma, Pa, high Sa) and press Start. The reeds breathe gently like real bellows. Switch to Tanpura for a plucked drone.
- Choose your Sa.
- Tick the notes to drone: Sa and Pa are the usual choice; use Ma instead of Pa for ragas without Pa.
- Press Start and sing along.
Frequently asked
What is a shruti box?
A small box of free reeds pumped by hand bellows, from the same family as the harmonium. It plays a constant drone rather than tunes, so singers can keep their pitch.
Which notes should I choose?
Sa with Pa suits most songs and ragas. Choose Ma instead of Pa for ragas without Pa, and add high Sa for a brighter drone.
Shruti box or tanpura?
The shruti box is steady and even; the tanpura's plucked strings pulse and shimmer. Many Hindustani singers prefer the tanpura and many Carnatic and devotional singers the shruti box.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
