About the Vocal Range Test

Find out how low and high you can sing and which voice type you're closest to. Sing an “ahh” sliding down to your lowest clear note, then up to your highest comfortable note. The test listens through your microphone, catches each note you hold steadily and shows your range on a piano keyboard, in octaves and semitones, next to the classical voice types. Nothing is recorded.

  1. Press Start and allow the microphone.
  2. Sing down to your lowest clear note and hold it for a moment.
  3. Press Next and sing up to your highest comfortable note.
  4. Read your range and voice type, and press Hear it to play your notes on a piano.
Questions

Frequently asked

What's a good vocal range?

Most untrained singers have about an octave and a half; trained singers often reach two octaves or more. A comfortable, well-supported range matters more than extreme notes.

What are the voice types?

From low to high: bass, baritone and tenor for most male voices, and contralto, mezzo-soprano and soprano for most female voices. Countertenors sing in the alto range.

Why doesn't it pick up my note?

Sing a steady vowel at a normal volume, close to the microphone and in a quiet room. Very breathy or very quiet notes are hard to detect. Headphones help if music is playing nearby.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
