Tune violin to G D A E
Your browser will ask to use the microphone. Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded. Tap a string above to hear its reference note.
About Violin Tuner
This page opens the tuner set for violin, G3 D4 A4 E5. Tune the A string first with the peg or fine tuner, then D, G and E. Many orchestras tune A to 442 Hz: change the Reference A4 box to match your ensemble. You can also choose viola (C G D A) or cello (C G D A, an octave lower) from the instrument menu.
- Press Start tuner and allow the microphone.
- Bow or pluck the A string and tune it until it's in the green zone.
- Tune D, G and E the same way, using the fine tuners for small changes.
Frequently asked
What are the violin string notes?
From lowest to highest: G3, D4, A4 and E5. Each string is a perfect fifth above the one before.
Should I tune to 440 or 442 Hz?
440 Hz is the standard. Many European orchestras tune slightly higher to 442 or 443 Hz; set the Reference A4 to whatever your teacher or conductor uses.
Should I bow or pluck to tune?
Either works. A smooth, steady bow stroke gives the most stable reading.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and there's no server behind it, so what you type never leaves your device and nothing is stored. You can check: it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
